JCC Insight · Practical guide

Shopify or WooCommerce?

Choose technology for operations, integrations and management responsibility, not just the monthly subscription.

Compare responsibilities

Shopify is a hosted subscription platform. A WooCommerce store depends on WordPress, hosting and extensions selected for the project. The core plugin does not remove other operating costs or maintenance needs.

Start with the tasks of whoever will manage the store: products, orders, content and technical support. A familiar interface and clearly assigned responsibilities matter more than a developer's platform preference.

Test the actual requirements

List the payments, shipping, countries, integrations and catalogue rules you need. Confirm each requirement in the proposed solution and identify any extensions or extra development. A supplier's advertised feature may have conditions or limits.

A platform name does not prove that a store will be fast, easy to use or effective at selling. Compare the intended experience and planned tests without attributing commercial results to technology alone.

Questions before deciding

  • Who handles updates and compatibility?
  • Which services and extensions have recurring fees?
  • How are backups and recovery managed?
  • Who owns the accounts and how is the project handed over?
  • Is there a proven solution for the required integrations?

The recommendation follows the business

At JCC, I start with scope and actual management capacity. An existing working store may need only a targeted correction. Migration makes sense only when the operational benefit justifies the cost, risk and transition work.
