JCC Insight · Practical guide

Platform or custom code?

Compare editing, development freedom and technical responsibility throughout the website's life.

Start with what you need to edit

If you will regularly update copy, images or products, ask to see how editing works. A platform may provide a ready-made editor; a custom project can also include editing when it forms part of the scope.

Editable content does not mean unrestricted changes to the entire structure. Redesigning a page or changing an integration may require development in either option.

Freedom carries responsibilities

Custom code allows a specific experience or business logic. Someone must take responsibility for changes and technical continuity. A platform removes some infrastructure decisions, but still has limits, costs and dependencies.

Neither option automatically guarantees better speed, security or conversion. These depend on the implementation, content and maintenance actually performed.

Questions to compare

Also consider who will manage the website. A solution suited to a business with ongoing technical support may not suit someone who needs everyday autonomy.

  • Which copy and images can I edit without support?
  • Who maintains code, integrations and updates?
  • What recurring costs and licences apply?
  • How are accounts, content and documentation handed over?
  • Which future changes need a new quote?

Choose for real use

At JCC, technology is chosen after understanding operations and scope. There is no mandatory monthly JCC maintenance by default. Additional changes or support are agreed separately with defined limits.
